Path-guided wrinkling of nanoscale metal films.

چکیده
Surface wrinkling instability is typically caused by compressive stresses in layered systems. In a bilayer system with a stiff surface layer on a drastically more compliant substrate, spontaneous wrinkle patterns emerge as a result of the wrinkling instability. The wrinkle patterns can be controlled to form ordered surface structures, offering an unconventional method for microfabrication. [ 1–22 ] Several methods have been developed to control wrinkle patterns: by introducing bas-relief patterns into substrates, [ 1 , 9 , 10 ] by locally modifying mechanical properties of substrates, [ 12 , 14 , 15 ] by placing patterned PDMS mold on the surface, [ 13 ] by applying anisotropic stress or strain, [ 2 , 5 , 11 , 17 ]

متن کاملComplex buckling instability patterns of nanomembranes with encapsulated gold nanoparticle arrays.
The nanomechanical properties of micropatterned nanomembranes containing gold nanoparticle microarrays were investigated with the buckling instability method. An unusual, complex pattern of buckling instability was observed for the nanoscale polymeric films under compressive stresses. An intriguing two-stage wrinkling was observed for these nanoscale films with spatially correlated instabilitie...
متن کاملSlippery or sticky boundary conditions: control of wrinkling in metal-capped thin polymer films by selective adhesion to substrates.
Wrinkling patterns at the metallized surface of thin polymer films are shown to be sensitive to the sticky or slippery character of the polymer-substrate interface. Existing theoretical models were expanded to specific boundary conditions (adhesive versus slippery) in order to rationalize these observations. Based on this concept, we were able to propose a new and simple method to orient the wr...

متن کاملSurface Wrinkling in Liquid Crystal Elastomers
Structured surfaces give rise to novel and potentially useful properties such as controllable wettability and structural colour. Here, we demonstrate structured surfaces via reversible surface wrinkling in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). A thin polymer film deposited on top of a shape-responsive LCE exhibits a reversible, periodic surface wrinkling pattern in response to temperature changes. ...
